Our Teaching Garden
Thanks to the efforts of Laura Griffen, Claudia Callaway's sister, landscape architect Laurie Callaway, and many parents, we now have a new "teaching garden." Gone are the wild weeds and scrubby trees. Now we have a couple of dogwoods, two espaliered apple trees (with multiple varieties of apples), two lilac trees, a rose bush, flowering annuals and perennials, colorful trellises for climbing plants and three large raised beds for class gardening projects. The purpose of the River School Garden is to both delight and instruct children in the planting and nurturing of vegetables and flowers. Recognizing that The River School's educators and parents are committed to creating a rich environment for children, there will be a focus on plants that delight all the senses--such as fragrant lilacs, colorful perennials, "fuzzy" lamb's ear, and pungent basil.
How You Can Participate
We are still looking for plants to fill in what is now a large space. If you are removing plants from your garden or dividing perennials, please keep out garden in mind. Parts of the garden are quite sunny and others are in partial shade and the soil is very rich and well-drained.If you want to spend some time in the garden. It will always be in need of weeding and tending.
