River School in Support of Infants and Toddlers with
Hearing Loss
STAMFORD, Conn. February 3, 2009—The River School announces that it is the recipient of a $2,500 grant from the Pitney Bowes Foundation. The grant from the Foundation’s literacy and education initiative will enable the River School to serve additional children with hearing loss in the toddler, pre-school classrooms and in the parent-infant program.
“We are pleased to offer our support to the River School’s mission—serving children with hearing loss,” said Kathleen Ryan Mufson, vice president of the Pitney Bowes Foundation. “This support will help with educational expenses for infants and toddlers with hearing loss, a critical age group at which language and communications skills are developed.”
Local Educational Agencies (LEAs) cover students’ educational expenses once they turn three. Many of The River School’s students who have hearing loss qualify for subsidies from their LEAs. Infants and toddlers, however, do not. The specialized, intensive support that young children with hearing loss need during the critical language-learning period (birth to age three) is rarely available through publicly funded, early intervention programs.
