The Owl Class Thinks Big!

April 04, 2008

As part of their "Think Big!” theme, the Owl class collected hundreds of donations of blankets, towels, cat and dog food, and more for the Washington Animal Rescue League!

The Owls have participated in local, national and global fundraising efforts for each different type of “Think,” including, “Think Me, Think You,” “Think Green,” “Think Locally,” “Think with your Heart,” “Think Historically,” “Think Globally,” and “Think Now.”

For “Think Locally” the Owls visited the Washington Animal Rescue League and met all of the animals for which they have been fundraising.  A class favorite was a puppy named Nudge. In addition to collected items, the Owl class used yarn, fabric, bells, and pipe cleaners to create homemade dog and cat toys.  They also assembled homemade “doggy” bags full of home-baked treats to bring to the animals. They saw first-hand how their efforts made a difference. As one Owl commented, “Wow! I never knew a bunch of kids could really make such a big difference. This is cool! Look at how happy we made the people and the animals. They are really playing with our toys!”

The entire school community was incredibly helpful in “Thinking Locally.”  The Owl class thanks everyone who helped them reach their goals.

Through May 1st, the Owls will participate in the Pennies for Peace project for their “Think Globally” activity. They invite the entire school community to join them by dropping off pennies in the bins in the school lobby. Pennies for Peace is an organization that brings hope and educational opportunities to children in Pakistan and Afghanistan. In these countries, one penny buys a pencil and opens the door to literacy. Our goal is to help build a school in each of these countries. The Owls are excited to participate in this global organization and to truly become change agents.
