School Community Recognizes Thanksgiving with Community Service

December 06, 2008

A Season for Giving

In the true spirit of Thanksgiving, The River School community participated in the Fannie Mae Walkathon for the Homeless and an in-school service project to benefit Martha's Table, a local non-profit organization that provides multiple services for the homeless and disadvantaged in northwest Washington.

For the service project, each class brought in a specific non-perishable item, and the project culminated with The River School community assembling 120 complete Thanksgiving dinner bags for less fortunate families at our Thanksgiving Potluck. Children and parents decorated bags and wrote notes to the recipients. The River School Parents Association donated $10 Safeway gift cards to include in the dinner bags. When the bags were ready, they were delivered to Martha's Table. The organization truly appreciated both the size of our donation and the care that went into completing the project.

A world of thanks goes to Fena Macdonald for getting this project going for the second year in a row. A huge thanks goes to the RSPA, and its Walkathon and Potluck/Snack and Pack volunteer teams. Many thanks also go to all of the children, parents and faculty members who donated items, made cards, helped set up the dinner, assembled bags, and cleaned up the work areas.
This truly was a community-wide effort and congratulations, River School, for a job well done!
